Debunking some myths about Pilates
Jan 26, 2021“It’s not that hard… “ “ It won’t help me drop body fat.. “ “It is too slow paced for me… “ “I like High Intensity REAL exercise..”
Trust me, I have heard them all.. common misconceptions that Pilates just isn’t enough of a workout. These comments generally come from people who haven’t actually tried Pilates and who definitely haven’t tried my pilates class!
This dynamic, low impact method which encourages you to connect with your mind, body and breath will not only improve your strength, stamina and aesthetics, but it can help manage stress and bring balance to a busy mind in a busy world.
We are here to bust some of the most common Pilates myths to help convert you to this marvellous movement method!
Pilates Is a Derivative of Yoga
UMMM..NOPE!
While Joseph Pilates studied a variety of body and mind disciplines and almost undoubtably would have been exposed to yoga, Pilates is not a derivative of yoga and do not utilise the same sequences of exercise/ flow. Although they complement each other beautifully, Pilates is more contemporary and the Pilates method follows a series of principles developed by Joseph, which can be applied to any exercise.
Pilates will fix my flabby abs…
Pilates will build super strong abdominals, backs, legs and bodies. It will help lean out arms and abs whilst developing cohesive, organised bodies which are resilient to the rigours and stresses of daily life.
Pilates is renown for flattening mid sections and building strength/ stability in the core. Developing a strong, confident body is one of the reasons it is such a successful tool for preventing and managing back and joint pain.
However, Pilates does not stop at abdominal work at all. Learning to move with fluidity and efficiency builds a balanced, stable frame.. Way more than just the abs folks…!
Pilates Is for Wimps..
Hmmmm….
Pilates is hugely adaptable, which makes it accessible for everyone regardless of their age/ ability/ experience.
Like any variation of sport or fitness, your goals will determine your method. Pilates can be gentle or super tough depending on the individual and their circumstances. Pilates, particularly Reformer Pilates is a firm favourite with elite athletes from the NBA and the NFL, like LeBron James and Antonio Brown.
This is the great strength of Pilates. The base movements can easily be adapted to ensure everyone gets the best out of their body to suit their goals.
I would argue, having to maintain the focus and energy required to execute Pilates properly requires massive amounts of concentration and mental toughness, characteristics which will only result in self improvement, whichever endeavour in life you choose to pursue.
Pilates Is Mostly for Girls…
The fact Joseph Pilates was a man, should instantly discredit this myth…!
Pilates has never been "just for women" . Joseph was a gymnast, boxer and rehabbed soldiers after the war. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a reported fan of the method. Pilates benefits bodies and brains, regardless of gender!
Anyone Can Teach Pilates With a Little Book and DVD or a Day course…
I wish this was a myth, unfortunately this is very true…
My industry is poorly regulated and there are lots of practitioners out there who hop on a weekend course, are then set loose on the public who frankly shouldn’t be. Be vigilant. You are the boss of your body and can choose the type of class you like and the instructor you like. Ask your instructor questions about their approach to exercise, spinal health, rehab. Any teacher confident in their method and training will love the opportunity to educate and inform their students to improve their practice, understanding and information.
Many people who seek a Pilates class have had back or joint pain, injuries or chronic issues and require a deeper understanding and education. It is imperative rehab clients receive good information and exercise recommendation to help ease discomfort, build confidence, stamina and strength.
So, don’t settle for a sub standard teacher, be choosy and ask questions!
